Fanmix: L'ampleur de notre guerre; Fredrick/Shosanna

Why, yes, another fanmix for these two from me. The title of this fanmix, L'ampleur de notre guerre, is from the French version of Portishead's Only You, and it translates to The scope of our war. It's fitting for Fredrick and Shosanna, I think. While I could sit here and try to articulate the reasons and motivations for making this one, I'll leave to these three quotes, which have been rattling around in my brain:

From Mélanie Laurent:

“When the movie starts, she is like a little animal – very young and scared. She’s alive, but dead inside because she has seen her whole family murdered in front of her. She buys a cinema – what a great place to hide! Then, when she meets the Nazi soldier, she starts to change. She becomes a vengeance-crazy woman – really obsessed with this one great idea to destroy the Nazis. She’s an amazing character because of these evolutions. She’s a child, a survivor, and she becomes a heroine.”

My favorite line from the scene in the projection booth, which leads Shosanna to reach out to Fredrick as he lay dying on the floor:

"The Face on the silver screen breaks the young girl's heart..."

And, of course, because of Quentin:

"I see them as my tragic lovers: my Romeo and Juliet. His only crime is being attracted to her under the worst possible circumstances. Any other time it might have worked."

Hopefully, I have been able to capture their conflict, anger, and ultimately, love.

I flailed so much when I found Only You in French! It was released as a promo CD in France that included the original version. Fortunately, fans have been willing to pass it around.

I love Shosanna and Fredrick so much it's ridiculous Tarantino has ruined my brain. ♥

Stunning Mix, and I love these two. I find them so tragic and yet enthralling. You know they are never going to happen but you want them to so desperately (or at least I did.)

Thank you! I absolutely love them, and it's because of their tragedy and their potential. They were just so separate from the rest of the story and characters. I very, very much wanted them to happen, too. Quentin rambling on in various interviews about them being tragic lovers didn't help me much, either.

Have you heard the version of Un Amico with lyrics? It's sung in French and is even about the importance of that one person in your life, and to have them with you until you die. There's a line that always sticks out for me with Shosanna and Fredrick, "Un ami reste toujours un ami."

Thank you kindly! With every mix I make for them, I keep wondering if I'll find enough songs for another one, and with each one, I keep thinking it'll be the last one. So, I'm continually proving myself wrong (much to my delight).

I really like this one. It has a particular mood to it (maybe a little angstier than the others?) and I love how the cover art came out; it all ties well together.

The quotes were just begging to be used, especially since Mélanie attributes Shosanna's character growth to Fredrick ♥
