Playlist for Rain Dogs

All about Rain Dogs:

Let me preface by explaining that this a playlist to accompany the writing of my screenplay, Rain Dogs. I've been developing, plotting, and researching the story for a little over a year now, and after working on an outline and scribbling out scenes and bits of dialogue, I have now begun to finally write it.

Over that year, the story has changed, characters were created and discarded, but the one constant is the relationship between the two central characters, Aviva Crémieux and Manfried Herz.

The title, Rain Dogs, I must first clarify, is from the title track of the Tom Waits album. As he had explained, rain dogs are the dogs left wandering after a storm, as all of their territory has been washed clean and they have nowhere to go. I decided upon this title when the song popped up one day on my itunes when I was researching. Everything about the song, especially the lyrics, is fitting for my characters and their story.

So what exactly is Rain Dogs about?

The story takes place in July 1945, in post WWII Paris, France.

Aviva Crémieux, a French Jewish woman and proprietor of an inn, Le Rossignol, reunites seemingly by chance with her former lover, a once German soldier, Manfried Herz, when he arrives at her inn under an assumed identity seeking shelter.

The two had met and formed an unlikely bond previously in 1941 when he was stationed in Paris and housed with her neighbors. A concert violinist at the time, Aviva had moved to Paris a couple years earlier, leaving her family back home in Nevers. Similarly, Manfried, who had lost his father to WWI, has only his mother back home in Berlin, Germany.

Come July 1942 and the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup, they were separated. Aviva narrowly escaped with her life and went on to join the Resistance. Manfried went to fight on the Eastern Front.

In all that time, neither stopped feeling for one another.

With their reunion, both confront their pasts and their possible future together.

Meanwhile, Aviva's inn, which served as a front for Resistance activity during the war, now holds meetings for her former group members to discuss - and deal with - so-called collaborators that remain in the city.

The whole story is narrated by Aviva, and if you're interested, I wrote a journal entry from her point of view for [livejournal.com profile] getyourwordsout that you can read [here]

Note: The last name Crémieux is from Adolphe Crémieux, a French Jewish lawyer, statesman, and a staunch defender of the human rights of the Jews of France. When researching the last name of Crémieux, I had also come to learn that Crémieux is considered to be a mystery of a name, as though it is Jewish and it is French, it has no city of origin to trace it back to.

Thank you! ♥

I've never written anything quite like a screenplay before, and though it is a bit of a challenge in some aspects, but I'm determined to see it through.

this sounds SO interesting and love the art!
Is that Georgie Henley?

Thank you so much! ♥

It's Mélanie Laurent; I used screencaps from one of her earlier films, La Chambre Des Morts, but I can absolutely see a resemblance between her and Georgie.

:)
I see! I was going to say "wow she looks SO much older!" xD

Mélanie usually has light hair (I envision my character with dark hair), but she and Georgie could certainly play sisters, couldn't they? It's almost uncanny!

did a little search and it is uncanny I agree with the darker hair :)

It's quite a project to take on, and I'm really excited about it. Just to be able to create something personal and original feels great, you know? And you're welcome! I'm glad to share it.

This is quite extraordinary, and a story very well told. I look forward to seeing how your screenplay develops, and wish you the very best of luck. Meanwhile, I'm taking your mix.

Thank you!

Thank you so very much! ♥ I'm sort of amazed at much the story has changed and grown into what it has become. Writing it is both exciting and frightening, as this the first time I've ever written a screenplay, but I know it's a story I have to tell and something I have to do.

You're welcome! I was apprehensive at first about sharing all of this, as it became something quite personal to me, but I'm glad I did.

Love the mix, and the art for it! And I'm loving your summary for your screenplay; I think it's going to be great!

Tom Waits seems like the perfect soundtrack for WWII France, doesn't he? I love the kinds of soundtracks Michael Mann utilizes, so that had an effect on how this playlist was shaped. Vangelis and Philip Glass are essential for the mood and tone, too. I JUST REALLY LOVE THEM.

Have a long prattle about my writing process:

I have the opening written out, though I got a bit stumped at how to appropriately handle emotional scenes without giving complete stage directions; my mindset is still on how I write fic, so this is a bit of a change. I found the first draft script of Cabaret in the basement at work, so it's become a sort of guide to help me out. There's also imsdb, so I'm just going to scribble out what I can during the week, then type it up and revise it come the weekend. And, since I'll be shipping it off to an actual, professional script analyst when it's done, I shouldn't be stressing so much. BASICALLY JUST WRITE, RIGHT?

It's been said by many that the first ten pages of a script should be stellar enough to want the reader to continue, so when I'm ready, I'll be sharing those first ten with you and others. ♥

WOOOOOOOOOOOOW am I slow on the uptake with reading this.

Rain Dogs sounds absolutely brilliant, dear! I have no words! The playlist made my night and the journal entry was astounding -- but of course it is, you wrote it ;)

A bientot!
http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on February 22nd, 2011 08:17 am (UTC)

Thank you! Outlining and working on Rain Dogs is why I've been sort of quiet around here lately. It's something personal and special to me, so my major goal this year is to get it written and revised so I can work on getting it somewhere (I'm thinking going straight to Daniel's production company would be best).

I did end up losing the cards I had outlining act I, which has set me back a bit, but I'm using it as an opportunity to make what I had thought out even better. I keep thinking, "This is my story, and I can do what I want with it."
It's sort of freeing, really.

I'm glad you enjoyed the playlist! Every track means something to the story and characters, so much so that I was at first apprehensive about sharing this. However, I'm glad I did. The journal entry certainly helped get into Aviva's mindset, and has made writing her narration that much easier. These characters have become a major part of me, basically.

When I get more substantially written, I'll be posting it. I want to keep you and others as up-to-date with it as I can.

Thank you ♥ It's my goal to get it written this year. After that, I have to register it with the WGA and make any necessary revisions. It is quite a bit of work, but I absolutely have to do it.

I definitely plan on posting parts of it, as well as sharing it once it's all done.

YAY! Love stories are my soft spot.

But love story + WWII = awesomeness , i mean if a love can survive that is worth dying for it <3 :D
http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2011 03:15 am (UTC)
Love stories are a major soft spot for me, too. The majority of my favorites are usually tragic in some manner.

i mean if a love can survive that is worth dying for it <3 :D
This is definitely my favorite kind of love story ♥ Both Aviva and Manfried are damaged from their experiences, but they're able to survive together.

WWII romances are a favorite, probably because of the kind of adversity the lovers have to overcome. I had watched Black Book when I first thought of Rain Dogs, and all I could think was that there were many stories out there like Rachel's, and surely, there have to be stories out there like Aviva's.
[identity profile] rainbowchelita.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2011 03:20 am (UTC)
Oh God i cried.. actually cried when muntze died. I kept waiting for something to happen that would save him, then i thought she was going to end with Akkermans and the dude was a backstabber.. the angst omg i hated him and felt betrayed.. it really made me feel real emotions ... God i'm still amazed how great was this movie!!!
http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2011 03:25 am (UTC)
I loved their relationship so much! I loved that yes, he was a German, but he was human and real and he really loved her. That moment on the train when he shows her his stamp collection immediately won me over. Muntze's death broke my heart, especially when Rachel finds out. After everything she had went through, she just couldn't take anymore.

I hated him and I love that Rachel was able to discover the truth about him and I loved how she sat quietly and waited for him to suffocate. So intense.

It's such a powerful film, and I really do wish more people knew about it.
[identity profile] rainbowchelita.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2011 03:30 am (UTC)
Omg that too, i was waiting for them to let him live but they just couldn't. And yes, when she cried it was like really seeing her break for all that she suffer.

Smaal and Akkermans were the worst betrayals, i mean Franken was a scumbag from the beginning but the other two being so close to the cause.. GAHHHH
http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on March 19th, 2011 04:12 am (UTC)
Carice was so brilliant. She and Sebastian Koch became really close after making Black Book, and it's easy to see why after seeing them as Rachel and Muntze.

It really is amazing how such actions weren't too uncommon, either. I have a character who is similar, in a way, only he is rabidly against anyone who he perceives to be a collaborator.

Such a wonderful film and such an influence on my own story.
