OMG I SPENT ENTIRELY TOO MUCH TIME ON THIS

Why yes, I'm obnoxious enough to do this. Even if you have no interest in Inglourious Basterds, this still may be worth your while as I've compiled a variety of artists such as Ennio Morricone, Grace Jones, Ultravox, Concrete Blonde, The Church, etc.

Under the cut are the full-size cover image, tracklist, lyrics, and link to download.

1. Ennio Morricone - Un Amico (Versione chitarra 12 corde) - Lyrics
Un ami reste toujours un ami
If you didn't know before that Un Amico has lyrics and Ennio composed different versions for the same film (Revolver), you do now. Vocal is by singer/actor Daniel Beretta. This version is just Daniel and an acoustic guitar; only the last verse of the song is sung.

2. Charles Bernstein - Paul and Samantha - Instrumental, from the film Deadly Friend

3. INXS - Suicide Blonde - Lyrics
Suicide blonde
Was the colour of her hair
Like a cheap distraction
For a new affair
She knew it would finish
Before it began
Something tells me you lost the plan

4. Grace Jones - I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect For You) - Lyrics
Had we met at a different time we’d be perfect for each other
Now were spending all our time, in this world apart together
My heart is aching, from all the love we're giving
We're not faking, is this the life we're living?

5. The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way - Lyrics
There's emptiness behind their eyes
There's dust in all their hearts
They just want to steal us all
And take us all apart

6. David Bowie - Because You're Young - Lyrics
He punishes hard - was loving her such a crime
She took back everything she said
Left him nearly out of his mind
They're people I know - people I love
They seem so unhappy - dead or alive

7. Real Life - Exploding Bullets - Lyrics
Stand close to me my little friend
It's so hard to see let's not pretend
There's danger in the night for you and me
There's men with armalite who kill for free

8. Iamx - Spit It Out - Lyrics
Pleasure for pleasure
It eases consequence
And love for a fall
But I know you love to take a risk

9. Riz Ortolani - Crucified Woman - Instrumental, from Cannibal Holocaust

10. John Farnham - Innocent Hearts - Lyrics, from one of Tarantino's favorite grindhouse films, Savage Streets
No more innocents
No more innocent hearts

11. Suzanne Vega - Left Of Center - Lyrics
I think that somehow
Somewhere inside of us
We must be similar
If not the same
So I continue
To be wanting you
Left of center
Against the grain

12. Ultravox - All Stood Still (12 inch version) - Lyrics
I suppose it's a bit of an odd choice, but I relate it to Shosanna and Le Gamaar.
The black box failed (The codes got crossed)
And the jails decayed (The keys got lost)
Everyone kissed (We breathe exhaust)
In the new arcade (Of the holocaust)

13. Charlie Sexton - Beat's So Lonely - Lyrics
Wanting him only
But the people never see
Her heart burning
That's the secret that she keeps

14. Green Day - 21 Guns - Lyrics
Do you know what's worth fighting for,
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating?
Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins

15. The Church - Under The Milky Way - Lyrics
And it's something quite peculiar
Something that's shimmering and white
Leads you here despite your destination
Under the milky way tonight

16. Ingrid Michaelson - Die Alone - Lyrics
Kiss the boys as they walk by, call me their baby
But little do they know, I'm just a maybe
Maybe my baby will be the one to leave me sore
Maybe my baby will settle the score

17. Concrete Blonde - Heal It Up - Lyrics
Feeling the fire under my feet
I was a liar
You were a cheat
Playing with knives
We were cut close to home
Close to the bone
You're so alone

18. a-Ha - The Blood That Moves The Body - Lyrics
It's the way we feel
Tonight
As if it's all unreal
All right
My love, won't you come back to
Our love, you know I'll react to
The blood that moves my body
Now covers the ground

19. Suede - The Next Life - Lyrics
See you in the next life
When we'll fly away for good

20. Ennio Morricone - Un Amico - Lyrics - Trailer for Revolver, the film it was written for.
Full track, vocal by Daniel Beretta.
Un ami reste toujours un ami

So, I'll leave you a more informed comment later. :P

Yay! Then the playlist should also make more sense to you, instead of looking like the soundtrack to a John Hughes film.

And I may barrage you with all of the Tarantino interview excerpts I've saved wherein he gushes about these two (which is basically every interview).

Above all, IB is a beautiful film with many memorable performances and characters.

[identity profile] larkworth.livejournal.com on October 25th, 2009 11:46 pm (UTC)
Why yes I did! I wonder what gave you that idea. :P

I think it was Tarantino's best movie since Reservoir Dogs.. maybe even better than Reservoir Dogs, but I'll have to think about that because that would be saying a lot.

It really was beautiful. And a lot more human than I thought it was going to be. I especially loved Shoshanna's storyline... and Hans Landa. Hans Landa is amazing. Christoph Waltz should get a best supporting actor nomination, but I don't think he will.
http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/: All for freedom and for pleasure[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on October 26th, 2009 12:02 am (UTC)
YES.

I think it's his best since Reservoir Dogs, too. I love everything Tarantino's done and I'm very close to thinking IB is his best work.

Shosanna was the reason I went to see IB, based off of the quick clip of her running and sobbing in the trailer (of course, when I was in the hospital in July, I was transfixed by the sight of Fassbender in fancy suits in GQ, so he helped, too).

I love that so many people were basically tricked into seeing IB because of the way it was marketed; it's so human and touching with this resilient, damaged woman at the heart of it. Mélanie considers Shosanna to essentially be the walking dead, which is why she is so understandably guarded; therefore, the scenes where she's showing vulnerability are so powerful. And the bar scene is one of my favorite parts of the film, aside from those involving Shosanna and Fredrick.

Christoph is excellent as Landa! I started to feel bad for him when he panics at the end in the forest and I had to stop myself and remember how vile he really was. He and Mélanie deserve many awards for IB, as does Quentin.

I'm so stupidly enamored with them and it's all QT's fault. He's laughing that wonderfully obnoxious laugh of his and rubbing his hands with glee over ruining my brain. It was a good brain, too.

JOHN FARNHAM TOURETTES. YOU ALSO KNOW QT LIKES TO LISTEN TO THE SAVAGE STREETS SOUNDTRACK AND PRETEND HE'S LINDA BLAIR.

I'll forever love John for writing songs specifically for a grindhouse film and then singing the hell out of them. Exploding Bullets is from Savage Streets, too, but I wanted John to have all of that glory.

Shosanna and Fredrick are my favorite Tarantino characters and I haven't loved characters of his like this since obsessively watching Reservoir Dogs when I was 17 (and then going as Mr. Orange for Halloween that year). And as far as women characters are concerned, I haven't been so impressed with one since Beatrix Kiddo and GoGo Yubari (Chiaki Kuriyama is basically my muse).

And Fredrick reminds me so much of Steven Shorter that I just love him to pieces.
[identity profile] piecesofalice.livejournal.com on October 25th, 2009 07:09 am (UTC)
I'm guessing you know the Farnham song, "You're The Voice"? There was a call for that to become our national anthem a while back. I'm completely serious.

Wow, Chiaki has grown up (that sounds more patronising than I meant it - you know what I mean)! She's beautiful - I love this photo here. Her hair! I'd kill for it.

I know we talk a lot about film in our emails, but yeah, Shosanna and Fredrick are the first characters I've given a crap about in a long time. QT has such a way with relationships, and women in particular. I JUST LOVE HIM AND THEM, OKAY

http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/: On the edge of the dark[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on October 25th, 2009 07:28 am (UTC)
That's actually kind of awesome. It's such a "FUCK YEAH, AUSTRALIA!" attitude.

Chiaki turned 25 on October 10. She has such stunningly unusual features that get better and better as she gets older (sort of weird, but I can generally pin-point her age in photographs based off of her facial features). Her acting career hasn't been terribly stellar and she's not considered very attractive or marketable in Japan, either. She wants to work more in America, but her management agency sucks. I need to get a copy of GS wandârando, which takes place in the '60s and focuses on the Japanese mod scene; she plays a girl who poses as a boy. And other than smut posts, I could also post pictures from her Princess photobook where she posed as princesses from European and Japanese fairy tales. I could ramble about her for ages, but I'll refrain for now.

YES. Before Fredrick came strolling in, Adrian Veidt was the only awesome German character in my life (though I do like mimicking Hans Grubers' "OH GAHD!") And cinema has been lacking in great women for a long time and Shosanna fills that void spectacularly.

I never did tell you about an acquaintance of mine who is friends with QT. Said person runs an annual horror film marathon at this little theater (original film prints and everything) and QT has helped him and the organizers out many a time. Long before meeting this fellow, he escorted QT around the city and QT then proceeded to max out his credit card on vinyl records and laserdiscs.
[identity profile] piecesofalice.livejournal.com on October 25th, 2009 12:44 pm (UTC)
I saw that she was 25 - why did I think she was so much younger? Maybe the hype surrounding the character, maybe? Her nose is very Western - if I can say that - but yeah, going through some sites today, I noticed her features did change a lot in her late teens-twenties. Which I suppose they do - I hope she gets more work, because she looks like a really versatile actress/model. (Like Diane, I think)

I really have to rip Richy Guitar for you (the sort-of Die Ärzte film), because Fredrick reminds me of Richy, and not just because a) they're both German and b) I want to do them both.

See, we need to escort QT around a city (any city) and have tea and max out credit cards. How good would that be?

And I just finished watching Privilege - yes.

YES!
http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/: Set me free[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on October 25th, 2009 07:43 pm (UTC)
Chiaki has such a unique beauty to her and in general, I don't think people know how to deal with someone who doesn't fit the typical mold. She was 17 when filming Kill Bill and 19 when it came out in 2003, so it is strange to think of the film being 6 years old (and because I was a teen in the late '90s, 1998 doesn't feel like it's 11 years ago).
She really is quite talented, but has been cast far too often as a tragic character; at this rate, I'd love to see Chiaki in a romantice comedy. She and Diane should team up together and QT should write something awesome for them.

We should! I'd talk his ear off, even though according to Daniel, you just can't win in a film discussion with QT. However, I'd love to have QT and my dad talk about spaghetti westerns and other film oddities from the late '60s - early '70s. My dad has seen many films from that period when stationed in Okinawa, but has forgotten titles; many film nerds have been stumped by him.

HOW AWESOME IS PRIVILEGE? Oh, Steven ♥
[identity profile] piecesofalice.livejournal.com on October 27th, 2009 09:23 am (UTC)
I cannot get over Privilege, seriously. It was EXCELLENT - the way it was filmed gets me all picspammy and excited. I think I capped about three hundred caps while watching it - like a twitch!

It's almost spooky how relevant it is, considering the Disney kids. And the music! *downloadz*

Nearly every frame of the film is worthy of being framed. And Paul Jones was so heart-breaking (some critics actually thought he couldn't act).
I had quite a few bootleg dvd sites bookmarked a few years ago and I loved going through them and seeing what would catch my eye; it was this still of Steven Shorter, followed by the film's description that intrigued me:

After getting a copy from videobeat, I watched it twice in one day and I could not and still cannot believe that there isn't a wider audience and more acclaim for Privilege. Whenever I talk with other filmbuffs who adore the obscure, this one still stumps them; Privilege is still too obscure (and there's only one surviving film print, which can be rented for showings, so that means that not even QT has a copy).

Audiences back then were horrified by and I looked up the ridiculous review for it in Time, as they found the premise absurd. Seventeen magazine hated it because their demographic was ridiculed in the film. Privilege came out right on the verge of Beatlemania and if it had perhaps come out in the early '70s it may have done better (though people found Brian DePalma's Phantom of the Paradise ridiculous in 1973, too). For years Privilege was classified as science-fiction because the notion of celebrity-worship was considered ludicrous.

What really inspired Watkins to make the film was the short documentary Lonely Boy with Paul Anka and something his friend and actor Terrence Stamp said, "All celebrities think they're God."

As for music from the film: http://www.box.net/shared/7lz5qgnnf7

Also, note to self: Must make double-feature out of Privilege and Phantom of the Paradise.

One last note; my dad recommended the film A Face in the Crowd starring Andy Griffith, similar to Privilege but the character becomes the opposite of Steven: he instead becomes drunk on the fame and power.

For real. I looked all over for an IB film companion, but they never made one (which seems really, really silly, considering all the artistic shots). This is the most I've looked forward to a dvd in ages Even moreso than Watchmen.
http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/: Acting on your best behaviour[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on October 25th, 2009 09:29 pm (UTC)
I would have loved for IB to have a film companion; I suppose it's something Tarantino just doesn't do (he didn't even storyboard the fight scenes in Kill Bill).

I haven't been so enamored with a film and its characters (Shosanna and Fredrick in particular) in a long time, other than Watchmen (which almost doesn't count since the novel has been around for over 20 years now). Tarantino's love for his work really shows in every detail of his films and seeing his excitement over film gets me excited.

I'm finishing up an S/F fic currently and have another multi-chapter fic centering on Fredrick planned, and while I certainly intend to get them up before December 15, having the film on hand will help keep me on my toes.
[identity profile] tehprincessj.livejournal.com on October 25th, 2009 09:42 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I think that's just it. While I was waiting for Watchmen, I still had the GN at home, and the film companion, so the wait wasn't so terrible.

Awesome! Can't wait! I have a few pages of fluff written myself, and I started to write something unrelated for the kinkmeme, but procrastinated until [livejournal.com profile] ladyofspring beat me to the punch, so it's only a beginning really. I think I've just been waiting until I've felt the proper inspiration, because you're right, we're in a really nice niche here, and the pressure is on to keep the writing good.
http://suspiriorum.livejournal.com/: This alone is love[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com on October 25th, 2009 10:03 pm (UTC)
I've been stuck on the smutty end to my current fic. I probably take longer than necessary to write, but S/F require some care and consideration to keep in character (as does Landa, which is why he's so far been relegated to guest appearances and mentions in my fic so far). And it's always best not to force your muse, which I've tried to do before. I do salute you for writing for the kinkmeme as I have difficulty with writing on the fly like that.

Our lovely niche has been worth it as we're very fortunate to have had nothing but good fic and talented writers, which not many fandom folks can claim to have. In short, we're awesome.

Putting the fanmix together was a real labor of love, as I revised it about three times, wanting to get it just right. And because the lyrics are extremely important, I decided to copy/paste/transcribe them and using an image of Fredrick and Shosanna would only contribute to the lyrics' value.

I was so excited when I found David Bowie's Because You're Young; that song, along with Heal It Up by Concrete Blonde urged me to post this fanmix.
