Jon and Adrian don't get enough love in the Watchmen fandom, perhaps because they're so enigmatic; but that's what's so fun about loving them! They provide hours of analytical fun! And going out on a limb here, but they had the most integrity as well and my heart bled for them so very much.
Also, I LOVE Hollis Mason. He's the reason I've ever cried whilst reading a graphic novel.
Exactly. And that integrity is what makes Ozymandias such a great villain (and character!) whether you find him morally reprehensible or not.
I HEART HOLLIS TOO. He is super great, but that part was so, so hard for me to read. I was actually pretty relieved that they didn't really show it in the film. :(
I had heard that Hollis' death is included in the full version, but that would end up altering the bar scene in the film if it is. Also, I had such a hard time moving on to the next chapter after his death; it was the promise of more Adrian and Jon that got me through.
Watchmen forced me to evaluate situations and morals that many of us would most likely view as black/white, right/wrong. Of course there are no absolutes in the real world and I ended up relating to, sympathizing with, and agreeing with charatcers and actions that I never would have considered before.
I found a particular vulnerability to Adrian; his exterior was cold and he had a strong public stoicism, but there was something very real, warm, and sensitive underneath the surface. Matthew portrayed that beautifully, I think. To give anything less and play it straight as a villain would be a disservice (and I'd demand Snyder's head on a pike). All other previous script drafts ended with Adrian getting killed off, which completely ruins the story and makes it too easy on the audience.
I was also so very thrilled for Jon by the end, to see him so genuinely happy. I often wonder if I could love a man like that, and I'd like to think I'd give it my best. It's not as easy for me to articulate my love for Jon as it is for Adrian, all I know is that I immediately fell for him the moment his character was introduced. Jon's origins barely edges out Adrian's as my favorite of their background stories.
Nyota/Manhattan fic would be absolutely intriguing, albeit crack-y.
Have you seen Under the Hood? I haven't yet but I want to mainly because of Hollis. ♥
Ambiguity is key to Watchmen; it's what the entire story is built upon really, so to have characters that are incredibly multi-layered, conflicted, and human reflect that ambiguity is truly wonderful. I love the fact that Watchmen challenges us to understand them even if we disagree.
I could definitely be persuaded to read some Nyota/Manhattan fic!
I haven't seen Under the Hood yet, though I do know that the dvd includes some behind the scenes footage of Watchmen, some of which involves Adrian being awesome.
I loved the moral ambiguity; every one lives by their own code of ethics like the rest of us, and to be forced to intimately know characters who clash agianst your own morals was uncomfortable, but necessary and realistic. People unfamiliar with the novel who hated the film were most likely offended by that, and I even heard some of the angry reactions in the theater when I saw the film. What amused me most, however, were the people cheering for Rorschach but then being disgusted by Adrian. One such fellow in the audience was muttering to his girlfriend over the fact that Adrian not only succeeded, but lived.
I still have Adrian fic and Terminator Salvation smut to get to, but a Nyota/Manhattan fic would be a wondrous challenge. Hopefully my head won't explode from trying to write Jon correctly.
