Stuff; learning a foreign language, reading, and foreign films.

[livejournal.com profile] larkworth recommended Whip It to me, which I think would make a fine double-feature with Zombieland (which I have also yet to see).

In the meantime, I'm downloading:

and

I ♥ Mélanie Laurent, the only downside is the torrent has no english subtitles.

Speaking of French, I have experience with the language, having taken French classes for nearly a year in elementary school, along with more of it in junior high, then taking French all through high school. I can notice translation errors in subtitles and scan articles and get the gist of it, but I really would like to become as fluent as possible and not let all those years of learning the language go to waste. There are many learning programs available, but I think I'll get back on track with this: http://www.smartfrench.com/Products.php
On top of all of this, I've been writing more Shosanna/Fredrick nonsense which I plan in posting this week. I also have my phobia piece for the November 13 art show and there's a pile of books I want to get to reading, but I've been stuck on Brideshead Revisited. Frankly, I'm not fond of Evelyn Waugh's writing style (the same issue my father has with him), but I adore Sebastian Flyte and Anthony Blanche, as Waugh's style beautifully suits them. However, I want to read Rilke, Pragmatism: A Reader, The Bhagavad Gita, and bell hooks. I've always enjoyed reading non-fiction, and with my fictional-character quota currently filled by those tragic kids from Inglourious Basterds, I'm going back to tackle my pile of books and put Sebastian on hold, for now.

I feel like a worthwhile member of society when I have piles of things to do/occupy me.

I highly recommend the Whip It/Zombieland double feature.

It just made sense to me to put them together. For Halloween, I plan on a night of Blue Velvet and American Psycho. Times like this, I wish a little theater of my own crammed to the gills with film reels so I can entertain myself and other weirdoes.

About five people I know online have independently decided to watch them as a double feature, and I don't know why they make so much sense together, but they really, really do. (I would also 100% read a crossover. Roller derby girls would do well in a zombie apocalypse, I think.)

And I know what you mean. I love planning out my own little fantasy film festivals and double-features and stuff. (And I actually live near a town that still has a drive-in, so I am a big fan of the dusk-til-dawn triple feature+cartoon reels plan as well. I'm kind of sad they don't make crap movies specifically to run as B and C movies at the drive-in anymore. I mean, okay, they've been replaced by direct-to-DVD, but it kind of takes the fun out of it when you're not watching them because you paid your money and you're gonna see all the movie.)

One of the drive-ins in my area had a double-feature of Ghost and Road House for Patrick Swayze a couple weeks ago. I almost wanted to go because you don't get that kind of unabashed drive-in fun these days. The only reason I love re-organizing the '70s newspapers at work is to check out drive-in ads; only a few of them are still running. One of them, Skyborn, was nicknamed Skyporn for years. I photocopied so many of those ads that I used them as the background for a personal art project.

There's something so much more fun about paying to watch schlock projected on a screen rather than renting it and watching it at home. What especially bothers me with modern B-movies is that they try too hard and the actors don't take their parts serious enough. Schlock cannot be forced, it must naturally occur. It's a shame that the Italian film industry isn't like it used to be in the '70s and '80s; if it was, Lindsay Lohan could have a career revival in giallos and Emmanuelle knock-offs and I would gladly pay to watch them. I want more post-apocalyptic nonsense, too.

And I'd pay to see roller derby girls fighting zombies.

Mélanie is SO GOOD in that film, it's no wonder she got the César for it! There are definitely English subs for it floating around online, though they are certainly not perfect (even I can tell!). Let me know if you need help finding some.

Looking forward to more Shoshanna/Fredrick from you!

Her César speech was so wonderful and I have no doubt that she deserved the award. If I have any issues locating subs, I'll gladly bother you for help!

Shosanna/Fredrick are so much fun to write. I got all angsty with them again, but I'm also letting them have some fun, too. I look forward to posting it so you can read it ♥

I haven't seen Zombieand yet, but I have the feeling that it would go very well with Whip It in a double feature. Do tell us what you think.

Good luck in taking up French again! I should do the same, being a former french student too. *is sheepish*

Argh... I still have to see Inglorious Basterds, but I think I will soon. My dad wants to see it too, so I think we might motivate each other to get ourselves to the theatre. Yay!

By the way, I think your journal layout is lovely.

The only downside to my double-feature idea is that Whip It is on its way out of theaters, so I better get to it as fast as I can.

I'm excited about getting into French again, but the main issue is having the proper amount of time to devote to it (other creative endeavors and my self-imposed reading list, along with work, need attention, too). I seem to thrive better, though, when I have a lot to keep me busy.

I'd love to see Inglourious Basterds again. As a fellow Ozy, I'd love to know what your thoughts on Fredrick Zoller, too. I've also determined that Hugo Stiglitz is Adrian's real father. Basically, I can't wait to spazz at you over this film ♥

And thank you! Diane Kruger really impressed me in IB, as well as her attitude in general. Her choice of American films hasn't been too great (even stating that her role in Troy was 'unnecessary'), but she's had to fight hard just to get noticed for more than being a former model (which she quit because of her dislike for the fashion industry and its effect on women's self-image). Diane has another interesting film, Mr. Nobody coming out, so now I'm hoping she's finally getting the work she deserves.
